Paintings depicting the West Garden Gathering have circulated widely since the Song dynasty. Such elegant gatherings among literati often included activities such as playing musical instruments, chess, calligraphy, painting, composing poetry, enjoying wine, tea, flowers, and incense, as well as appreciating antiques.
